Dear Fellow Toastmaster,

Lesson of the week: „People are not disturbed by things but rather by their view of things.” – Albert Ellis

Last Monday Katarina Banfi has proved again that Toastmasters is not only about practicing of communication or leadership skills, but also about learning new, valuable and useful things, which help you throughout your daily life. Our VP Education delivered her 8th speech with the title of Simple as ABC.

It is proved by Ellis’ experiments that the way people FEEL is largely influenced by how they THINK. Ellis suggested that people mistakenly blame external events for unhappiness. However, this is just our interpretation of these events that truly lies at the heart of our psychological distress.
Ellis developed ABC model to explain this process;
A as Activator referring “What is happening?”
B as Beliefs referring “What we think?”
C as Consequences referring “ What we feel and What we do?”
Regarding an excellent Toastmasters’ example, ABC of stage fright:
A is getting on the stage, when B starts to react, and your mind is covered by thoughts like “I will get ashamed. I will make mistake, and so on. While C is already known for everybody – Being blocked.

So if you change the view you take on things, you can overcome several difficulties and you will be disturbed by less things than before.

David Tasnadi delivered his 6th speech about one of his beloved hobbies, rock climbing and won the best speaker award of the session.
Marya Darabont completed her 9th speech project with the title of “What color is your parachute?”.  She convinced her audience how important is to plan your career ahead and be always aware what your next goal is. Based on her point, if you have a new job, you already have to think about your next one, because you can never be sure about what will happen.

The world of the day – DITHER – was introduced by our enthusiastic Grammarian, Richard Beamish;
It means to be unable to make a decision about something. E.g.: Stop dithering and choose which one you want. / She is still dithering over whether to accept the job she’s just been offered or not.

Altough we are in the middle of the summer, it is always necessary to plan ahead. That is why I ask you Fellow Toastmaster to schedule the date of Humorous Speech and Table Topic Contest for 15th of September to your dairy. In addition to scheduling it, start to think about your possible speech. If I am just considering my last night – when I was slapping mosquitos from 3 a.m till 4.30 a.m. with the Storytelling advanced manual – I am sure that your summer holiday can be a great topic for your humorous contest speech. 🙂

Our campaign is still on the floor:
Bring a friend and receive 4000 HUF discount from your next membership fee.
If you have any question regarding the initiative please contact our Vice Presidednt of Membership – Attila Rákos (vp-membership@budapesttoastmasters.org)

Enjoy summer and keep in mind the Lesson of the week!

See you soon!
